Precision CNC Turning & Heat Treating of Tool Steel Roller Guides
A client in the mill rolling industry needed roller guides fabricated for use in a bar and wire rolling mill. They came to McCorkle Machine & Engineering because of our precision CNC machining and heat treating expertise. We fabricated the roller guides using D-2 tool steel, HT to 60-64 Rc, turned to an outside diameter of 2.9921" and a length of 2.3622". We worked to tolerances of + 0.0003"/-0.0013", concentricity: 0.0005", producing a 16 µ in. finish. Even after heat treating, the finished components required no finish grinding.
Our in-process inspections included checking dimensions at various stages prior to heat treatment and final dimensions after heat treat. We also checked surface finish after finish turn and bore after heat treat.
