CNC Machining of Stainless Steel Components for the Packaging Material Industry
A client came to us to manufacture a stainless steel component that would be used in manufacturing packing foam. This adjustable radial micro foam die lip was fabricated from 17-4 stainless steel. Machining consisted of CNC turning the inner and outer diameter of the inner and outer lip and threading the inner and outer diameter of the inner and outer lip. Using our 3-axis CNC mill we drilled and tapped eight holes on the face of the inner lip and six holes on the flange of the outer lip. The fabrication processes was completed with heat treating the piece to RC 40/47 and hand lapping one fit.
This component had final dimensions of: inner lip- O.D. 5.750", I.D. 1.250", length 3.63"; outer lip- O.D. 7.80", I.D. 4.750", length 3.067". We worked to the following tolerances for this project: ±.001", ±0?-30', perpendicularity of .001", parallelism of .001", and concentricity of .001". To ensure the quality of this manufacturing project, diameters and angles were checked prior to heat treating, after heat treating, and upon completion.
